What is the best thing to do when a kid hits you? (he is retaliating for being punished)?

My 5 year old is completely not willing to admit he's done anything wrong. He hits me when I try to put him in time out. What can I do right when this happens? I know he needs more help than I can give him. We do get family therapy, but it is not doing much.
