You're reading too much into "trying". It's convenient language, but single celled organisms do not have awareness. They have reactions to stimuli. Organisms that have behavior that leads to their survival and reproduction are the organisms that are interesting in the study of evolution, because organisms that lack behavior that leads to their survival die. Even in the non-intelligent smallest form of life, if it lacks behavior that leads to its survival it dies. You've completely missed the point of Gould's example, there is no will.
