Can anyone tell me what type of plant i have?

I would really love to help you on this one Andrew but I can't picture the plant the way you explained it. You're saying the roots are somewhat bigger than the stem itself. In this lines, I was thinking it's a bonsai look alike. If you pull one leaf from the stem and it bleeds white then it's one of those ficus species that the nursery like to grow commercially to imitate a bonsai. If you can find out how to post the picture, I really would love to see.
